6th Grade Science - Mrs. Brandel

We are well into our sixth grade science at St. Christopher's School!

Our "New Chapter" is ENERGY!

We had our second test on Topic 2 - Solids, Liquids, and Gases Friday, 10/19.

The Sixth Grade Science has completed the first three chapters in  their Elevate Textbook - chapters dealing with Lab Safety, and an Introduction to Matter. and Solids, Liquids, and Gases.
Our discussions and hands-on labs  promises to create challenging and exciting learning experience!

Students will receive their Ch. 3- Solids, Liquids, and Gases tests back on Monday 10/22, They need to be signed and returned.
Grades are posted on Powerschool.

We have been working with a new science book this year - Elevate Science - which includes many hands-on activities, online interaction and the ability to highlight and keep notes in the textbook.
We have taken advantage of some of hands-on activities such as Surface Tension (floating paper clips on water) and LOSING the surface tension with detergent (breaking chemical bonds) and Gas Laws involving both Boyle's and Charles' Law using balloons.

There will be a Science Fair Project for the students in the 3rd trimester.
We will be working on understanding Scientific Method and the process needed to perform these projects.

******IT"S NOT TOO EARLY TO RESEARCH A PROJECT****

This year our curriculum will cover topics such as:

Science and Laboratory Safety (We will be using the lab on bi-weekly basis.)
MATTER - Observing, measuring & using matter
SOLIDS, LIQUIDS & GASES - Changes of State / Gas Behavior
ENERGY - Motion, Force & Work / Kinetic vs. Potential Energy
THERMAL ENERGY - Heat, Temperature & Heat Transfer

THERE WILL BE A STRONG EMPHASIS ON EARTH SCIENCE:
Introduction to Earth's Systems
(Geosphere / Hydrosphere)
Weather in the Atmosphere
Rocks & Minerals
Plate Tectonics
Earth's Surface
(Erosion & Deposition)

We will be having our Fourth Annual Science Bee this Fall (Date to be announced.)

*****LAST YEAR'S SIXTH GRADE WINNER OF THE THIRD ANNUAL SCIENCE BEE WAS

!

Student's grades will be listed on Powerschool.

***Students have the benefit of using the Study Guide Workbook In addition
there will be Vocabulary Quizlet games and Study Chapter Reviews including all Key Terms***(at the end of each chapter)

This year the sixth grade will be scaffolding (growing) many of  last year's concepts and also have been putting a main focus on Earth science.

We will be meeting daily and homework will be given on this page. However, it is very important that students also put all assignments in their planners in order to organize the books and supplies they need to take home each day.

There will be a week's notice prior to each test and they will be listed on this page.
There should be no weekend homework other than long-range projects and studying for tests.

There will be extra help for sixth grade on Tuesday mornings beginning at 8:10 A.M.
